The Problem
This kitchen upgrade was inspired by the exquisite green crystal knobs – imported from India. The client had fallen in love with some extremely expensive ones, but these came in at one tenth the price (including shipping!). Originally, we installed them to freshen up her kitchen until she could afford to go further with the project. When she was ready, we refaced the cabinets, using Shaker style doors. We continued with the floor, bringing in the green and balancing it with black for a striking alternative-checkerboard effect. The tiled backsplash was designed to build upon these colors – a contemporary Deco look incorporating green glass mosaics to further tie in the gorgeous green knobs. An eye-catching, vintage-style faucet expands the motif, and a hot/cold filtered-water system was added to the new sink area. In addition to a black blender and toaster-oven, new black appliances include the refrigerator and microwave. A very intricate paint job emphasizes all the interior architectural details, and several layers of shellac were applied to the molding around the windows above the sink, adding a glassy look reminiscent of the green mosaic tiles and knobs below. A collection of green glass bottles sits on the window sills, bringing the whole look together and rendering this room the very definition of decorative deliciousness!
